VOTS Women’s Ultimate League 2008

Beginners Welcome!

What is Women’s League?

This is a women’s only league offered by Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS). The goal of league is twofold:

  1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate
  2. to provide a place for women of all levels to play in a competitive team-oriented atmosphere
What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate (there is no running/walking with the disc) until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

When & Where are games held?

Wednesday nights
July 9 – July 30, 2008
8-10 pm

***Teams play 1 game per week***
All games will be held at Benedict Park.

Who can play?

This is primarily an adult league, open to women ages 18 and up. Players who are 16-17 can sign up but must submit a signed parental waiver with their registration. Players under 16 are not eligible to play. To be eligible, players must turn 16 years of age before the end of league.

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

Nope! All players sign up as individuals and are placed on teams in a manner which evens out the number of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players per team.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! In fact, you don't even need to know how to throw a disc. We teach all new players the rules and strategies of Ultimate as well as the basic throws. As a new player, you (along with other new players) will be placed on a team with other moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

Is there anyplace to play before league starts?

Yes!

There is a FREE women’s clinic on June 25, a few weeks before league starts! This is a great place to learn to play or to improve your ultimate skills.

There are also women's practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm at Benedict Park throughout June and July. While these practices are geared toward getting the Phoenix women's team into shape, new players are welcome!

Additionally, there are a number of open, beginner-friendly, pickup games in the area. Info on those and the practices can be found at VOTS.org and the Phoenix Women's Ultimate site.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

  1. Non-metal cleats or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats.
  2. An shirt appropriate to your teams color. Teams will be either white, blue, red, or green.
  3. Water. You'll get thirsty!
How do I register and much does league cost?

Registration is now closed.

If you missed out, check the calendar at VOTS.org for open play opportunities and join the VOTS yahoo group to be kept updated on when the next league begins.
