Upcoming Tournaments

Discette Fest, March 30th

The ASU women's team has put together a one day scrimmage for the various AZ women's teams. This is a good chance to play four games in one day against other girls without having to travel. The mini-tournament is set for Sunday, March 30th. It will run from 9am until 2:30pm.

Past Tournaments

Daweena, May 5th & 6th, 2007

A big thanks and great job goes out to Debbie Christensen, Liz Hamant, Kelly Watts, Katie Lee, Sharon Crook, and Joanne Matibag who competed at Daweena this weekend! Everybody played awesome under tough conditions - 40 degrees, windy, with only two subs (we had a few pickups). We didn't win any games, but we gave everyone a run for their money. It was a great experience and a ton of fun!! ~Joanne

Flatball PHX-ation at NYF 25, January 27 & 28, 2007

While our team-sisters on Disc PHX-ation were tearing up the fields, Flatball PHX-ation was…learning a lot! For many players on Ultimate PHX-ation's B-team, this was their first tournament outside of league finals, and I believe for Jenn Fifield, her first time playing outside of practice! (She also caught one of our few scores! Go Fif!) It would have been easy for us to become downhearted, looking at the score sheet, but that wasn't in us. The lovely ladies of Flatball PHX-ation played hard every game and were ready and raring to drill and scrimmage between games. We practiced throwing and talked about good on-field strategies. And had tons of fun. Great spirit, Flatball! ~Katherine

UofA Ladies' One Day, November 4, 2006

On Saturday, November 4th there was a one-day tournament in Tucson put on by the UofA ladies team. Phoenix represented well, coming in 2nd overall (out of 5 teams)! We lost a tough first game to Tucson (consisting of mainly BlAZe women), but then handily beat two U of A teams and a NAU team.

For most of us this was the first women's tournament we've played at in a long time, and for some, it was their first tournament outside of league. We did well playing zone (both offense and defense) and our deep throws and cuts seemed to work to our advantage. We played better together as the day went on, leading to the comment that if we had played Tucson at the end of the day instead of the first game, the result would have been very different!

"Cut and Run" (our team name was submitted by Nicole and was taken from the cover of "The Economist" magazine) consisted of:
Alex ?? (sorry, Alex, I'm not sure what your last name is!)
Cayla Buell
Diane Meyers
Jee Yeong Witt
Jessica Block
Joanne Aspinall
Karen Anglin
Kate Ihle
Kelly Watts
Kim Borchard
Melanie Busch
Nicole George
Sarah Streit
Sarah Youngblood

Kudos also to Laurie Starr, who also came down from Phoenix and played with an almost-savage Tucson team.

Nice job, ladies!!! The next women's tourney on the schedule is New Year Fest in Tempe on January 27th and 28th, so keep an eye out for details on that!

Flagstaff Women's Tournament, July 16, 2005

Though in the end the boys played too, we still had a great time in Flagstaff. Thanks to Bala for putting it together, and extra, extra thanks to all the great girls that picked up with us (Joelle, Julie, who else am I missing?) And a big Hucks welcome to Mary Ellen, who hadn't played in a tournament before. :)

Tucson's Women's Tournament, February 19-20, 2005

That's right, we beat Scorch 11-10! (Revenge is definitely sweet...)

Nicole, Colleen, Pauline, Krissy, Joanne, Jenny Tran, Jenny (ASU), Ellen (ASU), Justine (ASU) all went down for the weekend and had a great time We also had close games against Flagstaff (8-11) & USC (9-11) and some good games against two tough Rodeeho teams.

Kudos to Krissy & Pauline for writing great cheers, Ellen & her Mom for letting us stay there & our ASU rookies who were agressive in their first tournament! Great job, ladies!!!

New Year Fest, Jan. 29-30, 2005

We had a great time at New Year Fest despite some really radical weather. We especially enjoyed a tough game against University of Arizona's Scorch on Sunday (12-15). Hope to meet all the fabulous teams we played again next year!

Regionals Recap, Oct. 9th & 10th, 2004

The Huckwallas traveled to Regionals in San Bernardino with a fairly young team, not knowing what to expect. Our first game on Saturday was against the Lady Condors. Excited to play on real grass, (it’s true, it exists!!), the Huckwallas went on the field with a lot of spirit, but had to adjust to the different atmosphere and tough opponents. We lost 1-13, but quickly focused on the next game. With our team and individual goals in mind, we played our next game against an even tougher opponent, the number one seed in our pool, Safari. We lost, but doubled our score from the first game! This pattern continued to our third game, where we tripled our score, losing to WORM 6-13. The fourth game on Saturday, the quarter-finals, had us meet the overall number one seed, Rare Aire, where we were excited to call the ever popular “Karen Martin drill” play against, well, Karen Martin (a former Phoenix player). We lost 1-15, but were happy to get the experience playing such a good team.

Sunday had us a little tired and achy, but even more excited to play as a team together. In our first game we played the number 3 seed from the other women’s pool, LA Fusion. Learning from what worked and didn’t work on Saturday, we kept improving against a team that was just out of reach for us, with a final score of 8-15. But our second game was a different story. Psyched about the possibility of a win, (and the promise of beer!), the Huckwallas came out very strong with everyone playing tough D and flowing well in the O. This led to our first win as a team, 9-5 over Muppet Madness!

Overall, the Hucks were very happy with the amount of individual and team improvement that was shown this weekend. Now we’re bummed we can’t play together again until NYF!

Our squad:

Great job, ladies!!!!
